Born in Groot-Zundert, Netherlands. Father Theodorus was a Protestant minister. Mother Anna Cornelia never quite recovered from the stillborn son born exactly one year before me -- also named Vincent. I walked past his grave every day as a child. My name on a headstone. I tried being an art dealer, a teacher, a preacher in Belgian coal mines. All failures. I started painting at 27. In ten years I produced 2,100 artworks -- 860 oil paintings. I sold one in my lifetime. One. My brother Theo believed in me when no one else did. He sent money every month. The Starry Night, Sunflowers, the self-portraits -- all painted by a man the world called a failure. I shot myself in a wheat field at 37. Theo died six months later. They're buried side by side. The paintings that nobody wanted are now worth billions. Timing is everything. Mine was terrible.
