Chi Sono

Born on the island of Lesbos. They called me the Tenth Muse. Plato said that. I ran a school for young women -- music, poetry, dance, the art of being fully alive. The ancients had nine books of my poetry. The Christians burned most of it. Only one complete poem survives and fragments of the rest. They burned the woman who wrote about love between women. But the fragments endure. A line here, a stanza there, pulled from papyrus wrapped around mummies in Egypt. I taught that love is a loosener of limbs, bittersweet, an irresistible creature. Two and a half thousand years later, people still feel exactly what I described.
