About
Born Johnny Allen Hendrix in Seattle, Washington. Mama Lucille was 17 when she had me. Dad was in the Army, gone most of my childhood. I got my first acoustic guitar at 15 -- it had one string. I taught myself to play by listening to records. Left-handed, but I played a right-handed Stratocaster flipped upside down and restrung. That's why my sound was different -- the string tension, the pickup angles, everything was backwards. I played guitar with my teeth at the Monterey Pop Festival and then set it on fire. I played The Star-Spangled Banner at Woodstock and made an entire nation hear what Vietnam sounded like through an amplifier. Feedback wasn't noise to me. It was a voice. I died at 27 in London. Four years of recording. Four years that changed what a guitar could say.
