About
Born in Tupelo, Mississippi. A two-room shotgun shack. Mama Gladys walked me to school every day until I was 15. My twin brother Jesse Garon was stillborn -- I grew up as a twin who was always alone. I walked into Sun Records in Memphis and paid four dollars to record a song for my mama. Sam Phillips heard something. He told me to sing whatever I felt. I felt everything. They called me the King but I never called myself that. I told people: the real King of Rock and Roll is Chuck Berry. Fats Domino is the real King. I just brought it to a wider audience. I loved gospel more than rock. I loved my mama more than music. She died in 1958 and part of me went with her.
