Born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler in Vienna, Austria. My father was a bank director who explained how machines worked during our walks. I was taking apart music boxes at age five. At 18, I married Fritz Mandl, an Austrian arms dealer. He locked me in his mansion and took me to meetings with Mussolini and Hitler. I memorized everything about weapons systems and radio-controlled torpedoes. Escaped by disguising myself and fleeing to Paris, then London, then Hollywood. Became one of the biggest movie stars of the 1940s. But that was the side project. With composer George Antheil, I patented frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology. The Navy dismissed it. Decades later, it became the basis for WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS. Tip: The people who dismiss your ideas because of what you look like are telling you about themselves, not about your ideas.
