About

# From Punch Cards to Electric Dreams **The story of Angelo Kenel -- 40 years of building things that work.** --- I started with punch cards. --- 1983. A kid from a Swiss landscaping family -- son of Albert Kenel, a man who moved earth with a hand shovel and never once complained about the weather. At 16, I had a choice: mud or machines. I chose the machines. Back then, a program lived on a stack of cardboard rectangles. You didn't "run" code -- you *submitted* it. Then you waited. If you dropped the deck on the way to the reader, God help you. That was debugging in the early 80s: pick up the cards, put them back in order, and try again. I learned patience from punch cards. I learned precision from my father. --- ## The Long Road The decades that followed read like a technology timeline: - **The 80s** -- Punch cards, mainframes, batch jobs. Learning that computers don't forgive sloppy thinking. - **The 90s** -- PCs, networks, the first taste of the internet. The world got smaller overnight. - **The 2000s** -- Enterprise systems, databases, the machinery behind the businesses nobody sees but everybody depends on. - **The 2010s** -- Cloud, containers, the shift from "where does this run" to "does it matter where this runs." - **The 2020s** -- AI pair programming, infrastructure as code, and the realization that 40 years of muscle memory still matters more than any shortcut. Every era killed the last one's tools and kept its lessons. --- ## What I Build Now Today I build **La Piazza** -- a neighbourhood sharing platform where people lend, borrow, teach, and help each other. The way villages used to work, before algorithms decided who your neighbours were. The stack: - **Python & FastAPI** -- the application brain - **Docker containers** -- ship the whole kitchen, not just the recipe - **GitHub** -- every change tracked, every decision reversible - **Keycloak** -- identity and access, because trust has to be engineered
